Perpetually Improve Yourself

by Cecile Cinco

Getting old is no reason for not improving one’s self. In fact, the more we get old, the more we should put some effort in improving ourselves. Be it learning a new skill or honing what we already have, still, there’s always room for improvement. If it isn’t so then we’re perfect.

Take for example my mom. Back in the mid-80s when XTs and 286′s were the top-of-the-line PCs in the local market, my PC training began. By the mid-90s, my mom had her own computer. I taught her how to use it and she learned. When I came home from work one day, she told me a certain family friend called and was looking for me because of some computer trouble. It turned out I was no longer needed since she was able to tell our friend some suggestions she could take and maybe it could solve the problem–and it did! She learned it from the experiences we had. She takes the time to know when she can even if it was way above her scope. She’s a seamstress, by the way, up until now.

Maybe it is the necessity that pushes her or even me to learn more. If there’s one thing I lacked, it’s the money I can have for academic education. Having not gone to college made me look for ways to learn even on my own. I can say I was able to work for the government twice, for what I could do and not for what paper I lacked. My last job was for web designing I just learned from the internet. Back then (2000) it wasn’t even taught in trade schools. It so happened that the company was badly in need of a designer and I was recommended by a mutual friend. When asked for my price, it turned out it was the salary range of their system administrator. It was just for 5 months (contractual) but it was worth it.

The internet is just at our fingertips. Many do just play with it. But if you want to survive the economic crisis the whole world is now experiencing, you’ve got to develop yourself. You may have your focus but do have some sub-focus as well so you don’t just get fooled. Or, as I said earlier, hone yourself more on what you’re already good at. That way, when you send logistics resumes, yours will stand out.
