Posture And Asthma

by Cecile Cinco

I do have asthma. I got it when I stopped doing all the strenous activities I used to do when I was living on my own and I could do whatever I wished to do without thinking of anyone else at home because there was no one else at home. Those activities were swimming, cycling, hiking, volleyball and bowling. My body was exercised. Exercise is needed to develop the body’s immune system. I may have had asthma already before but since I was exercised I had enough to counter any would-be attack at all.

Now that I have 98% of exercise gone, immune system is much lower than before. Asthma is almost always winning with each attack. Add to the lack of exercise is the wrong posture. Being very comfortable with the monitor as my best buddy to the world (read: I’m always in front of the computer) without the right chair (no back rest), I tend to slouch more often than not. Slouching is never good for asthma. It crushes one’s lungs. Actually, one of the first aids for asthma attack is pulling back your shoulders and putting your chest out and your chin up to open your airway and remove the stress to your lungs. I should buy a computer chair soon.

While watching movies, posture tends to go wrong if you’re seating or leaning at the wrong angles. If you have a home theater, it would be good to have a matching theater seats like those of Berkline. What do you think?
