by Cecile Cinco

I have been busy multitasking this morning, blogging, especially with my recycling blog (I have to update it more regularly now since I had the video interview yesterday which is to be shown on local TV channel), thinking of other recycling projects, doing the laundry (using the machine, though), listening to classical music (as if that needed extra hands!), checking on certain groupd I’m involved with on FB, clicking on PTC and now checking on Easter basket customization. No, I don’t have any need of it. I just had to see what they offer as I can do baskets too for different purposes!

With all those going through my mind, I forgot I haven’t eaten yet. I realized I’ve been hungry and felt somewhat dizzy. I stopped everything except for the classical music, and had lunch. Finally I’m full and ready to continue with my work. Ahh…full!

by Cecile Cinco

I don’t see purple yam (ube) that often. I mean the root kind, not the one in the bottle or some packaging that’s ready to eat or spread on your bread. I know purple yam is expensive but I did not realize it’s just ten pesos more than the purple kamote (sweet potato)!

As part of a healthy diet, we’ve often bought purple sweet potato and eat it plain like baked potato (without the cheese) to pack on some energy instead of eating rice (which I have been skipping form some 4 months now). Now that I saw the purple yam vendor passed by, I called him and learned that it’s just a few pesos more expensive–but I get to eat more of the purple color, which is what’s important in these tubers!

I find it also tastier and heavier sans the sugar, milk and butter that gets included when it’s cooked as spread. I just sliced it to palm size and bake it (better than boiling as the nutrients don’t mix with the water). To eat, I just peel off the skin and bite!

I do love fresh hot chili cut into bits and spread all over my plate as topping and with every spoonful, a bit or two will give wake up my cells.

It is expensive these days, though. I was in the supermarket a few days ago and I checked. It is still expensive and some pieces in the pack have already rot.

I went to the condiments rack and checked the cayenne. With that small bottle, it is even more expensive. I asked my mom who was with me then if cayenne is really that pricey. She then told me to go to where condiments are bought by the grams. I see! I never thought there was cayenne there. Chili powder in that section wasn’t hot enough for me.

Conclusion: price of cayenne in bottle is expensive due to the bottle.

My mom used to say when we kids were little, “you are what you eat, so eat right.” Candies were banned and we ate brewer’s yeast and wheat germ…and I love them! In fact, just recently, I wolfed on some my sister gave me. Wheat germ, that is. None in my family liked it but I sprinkle it on my food and when I feel I had just a little, I’ll spoon some directly into my craving mouth.

Back when I was little, my choice of food were all healthy. There was no Jollibee, KFC, McDonald’s at that time. The only fastfood I remember was Tropical Hut which was far from our place and we see once a week when the bus passes by EDSA corner Ortigas, if I’m not mistaken. I love the smell of TH because you can savor its goodness from the bus!

When I became independent, living alone at my hometown (Olongapo City), eating at my own will, I was still living healthy, I should say. I rarely eat rice but I down about 5 glasses of full cream milk every day. Since I knew then that milk is a complete food in itself, I thought it could be enough. In 2 days, a kg of powdered milk gets ready to be replenished. Being sportive at that time, I did not find it hard to get energy, even for mere milk meals. Oh, I ate bars of cheese too. My sports included biking, volleyball, hiking, swimming and bowling.

When I moved to Quezon City for another job, my life became different. I lost the sports and all I did the whole day was sit in the bus while traveling to and from work (3 hours each way) and most of the time in the office, in front of the computer (then a 286!). My food became mostly junk. Wendy’s was just near our office and I’d usually get a baked potato cheese and cheese…my favorite! I could get the salad but I have no one to eat it with. With my tower skills (getting as much salad on the plate at one go) I’d feel guilty just to waste it if no eaten.

Now, with all the junk food I’ve eaten, I think I need to check on some weight loss products.

by Cecile Cinco

This is as spontaneous as it can get. The other day I was referred to a Kraft Eden site and I found out I can be part of a world breaking record on December 14. I got excited as I’m a cheese eater and lover. I usually eat a whole bar of cheese (the small one). Especially when I run out of time to eat and I’d have to rush to a strenuous event like a bowling tourney. I usually buy a bar of cheese and a liter of choco drink. Heaven!

Back to the Kraft site. My thoughts churned. My imagination rolled. I wanted to conceive an idea and contribute to the cheese recipes already existing. I wanted it my own. I also wanted it simple and economical yet special. Something that will make one crave for more.

Yesterday, I asked my eldest to buy the ingredients on her way home. This morning, an hour ago, I executed what brewed in my mind. It came out perfect for the first try. Just what I imagined. Below is the recipe and pictures taken were the first set…then I ran out of fuel. Good thing the first set was already perfect.

C5′s Original Cheese Sticks

Ingredients:

1 bar Kraft Eden cheese, sliced about half an inch thick then cut lengthwise in half so you get about 1/2 in x 1/2 in x 1 1/4 in.

corn starch (left) and granulated breading (right)

1 egg, beaten, with a pinch of rock salt (I don’t use table salt because it’s chemical-based. With rock salt, I can be sure it came from the sea.)

and some oil for frying (deep frying is NOT necessary).

Procedure:

1. Dip cheese stick in egg.

2. Cover with corn starch.

3. Dip again in egg.

4. Cover with granulated breading.

5. Set aside and repeat for each cheese stick you prepared.

6. Prepare your pan with some oil and with medium-low fire.

7. Put enough enough cheese sticks with enough room for turning and enough time to turn when golden brown (not charred).

8. Turn each stick upside down when golden brown. It takes about 1 minute only before it does turn golden brown.

9. Deoiling. Lay down fried cheese sticks on absorbent napkins for easy deoiling (I don’t know how it’s officially called in recipe terms).

10. Plating. Serve with tomato catsup or mayo or thousand island dressing. I prefer hot sauce but I don’t have it right now. You can also use gravy or sauce.

This is my YUMMy contribution! Lasang ulit!

by Cecile Cinco

At 2:35 pm, I just finished my lunch. I started late so I ended up late as well. I wasn’t that hungry though I did not really eat that much. I’m actually in some sort of diet. I think it’s working. Well, I think. Basically it’s a no-rice diet so it’s a carboless diet.

So what did I cook? I scanned what’s in my kitchen. Some lady fingers (that’s green chillis which hotness is mild), red onions, and eggs.

So I sliced the lady fingers diagonally, cut the onions into rings, and beat 3 eggs. Sprinkled a dash of salt to taste and some omami to bring out the flavor.

Heated up the pan, stir-fried the onions and when the rings are half-cooked, put in the sliced lady fingers, stir-fried them more and put in the beaten eggs. Flipped the whole bunch to cook the other side, then plate it. Pour some honey on top. Serve it or eat it. In my case I ate alone. Yummy!

Centuries have passed and still we don’t stop looking for the fountain of youth. I even remember the movie The Lost Horizon when I was still very young. I think it was in the early 80s. According to the story, there is a place where you don’t look old even if you are more than a hundred years old but if you try to get out of the bounds of the place, your physical age will manifest in just a few hours you’ve gone past the gate.

Up until now, we have continued to look for the best fat buster, skin whitener, age defyer, etc. We also have been told “you are what you eat.” If you eat tomatoes, you will have rosy cheeks. Eat carrots and your sight gets better.

Since many are concerned with fat busters more than ever, what foods can we concentrate on? Do a search on each of these: acai, alfalfa, alpha lipoic acid, barley juice, buckwheat, cayenne, DMAE, flaxseed, garlic, green tea, lactobacillus acidophillus, salmon, soy and wheatgrass.

Those are the ingredients that can bust your fat, fast. If you don’t know where you can get those, they are all jampacked in Lipovox.

Now I know why everyone says that life begins at 40. It is at this age that people generally get more health conscious. During the previous years, we only generally enjoy even the “foods” that we know that are certain to destroy our health.

Living a life free of seafood, pork and other Bible-declared unclean creation, I may be considered living a less dangerous eating lifestyle. Still it’s not enough. Stuff that were non-existent for several millennia are being devoured during our times…and they’re killers that enter our mouths with 100% free entrance pass from our brains.

Here are a few of those killer “foods” that surround our lives; if you don’t take good care of your intake, you might end up changing catheters in the hospital:

- sugar
- doughnuts
- soda
- french fries
- chips
- fried non-fish seafood (this is not my problem at all)

Below are alternatives many use in exchange of sugar but they are even worse:

- aspartame (fake sugar)
- sucralose (better than aspartame but still dangerous)

For detailed explanation, better get to know why these are dangerous to your health and what makes them dangerous.
