by Cecile Cinco

Among the Facebook applications, Farm Town holds the record as the top 1 Most Frequently Played Game. At least, for me. There’s more to it than just clicking. It’s the closes to a real farm in terms of buying seeds, planting and harvesting. You get to choose yourself where and when to plant. You get others to harvest for you and they are paid or you can harvest it yourself. In addition, there is communication among the farmers. It’s a chat and play at the same time. You get to know people from other parts of the globe.

In addition to plain farming, you also get to beautify your farm with fences, houses, trees, flowers and even ponds. As you go up each level, some features gets unlocked. I’ve seen very beautiful farms. Although I can beautify mine now, I’ll wait till I can buy the largest farm I can buy. From level 15 and all the odd numbers till level 25, you get the option to buy land in addition to your existing land. Your farm gets bigger.

Farm Town gets addicting so if you haven’t started yet, don’t tell me I did not warn you. I just learned recently that there are even Farm Town cheats. It turns out that a matrix has been made to plot the price of seeds, the length of time it gets ready to be harvested, how long before each withers, how much to harvest and how much it gets sold for. Anyone can figure that out if given the time to spend on it. Somebody has done it, why reinvent the wheel, so to speak? My point is, that’s not a cheat at all.

I’ve done several searches and there exists a cheat. Actually several but the working one (as one claims) is a certain application you have to install. It makes your avatar 5x faster and other stuff it can do. I did not delve more into it because I don’t like it. It’s really a cheat. Though the fact that somebody was able to do it means the system is glitched. This glitch is selfish because it favors the player.

Gift-giving is glitched too but you don’t need anything else other than your browser to be able to send out more than 1 gift to the same person within the day. Besides, this glitch is outward. You give than receive. When you give, you don’t expect anything else in return but the natural law of giving compels the recipient to do the same. It would be the recipient’s choice to give in return or not.

So, you want to give more than what you can naturally give? Here’s how:

1. log into your Farm Town

2. click on Send Gifts

3. open several new tabs or windows to show the Send Gifts page

4. in each tab/window, choose the gift and the person/s you want to give the gift to but don’t click yet the final sending.

5. when you are done with all tabs/windows, click each final Send button. If you did 7 tabs/windows, the person/s will receive 7 gifts.

How many can you send? It all depends on your computer’s memory.

Another childhood dream I had was to live in a trailer. One that that can travel from one place to another and all you have to do is pay a parking fee if there’s none that’s free. That way I can go from one place to another without having to pack at all since my suitcase would be the whole trailer!

I learned later (just a year ago, actually) that trailers for residence are actually set. They are not driven! You rent a lot or buy a lot and set your trailer there. It is a house of the poor in the US. That’s what my friend from West Virginia said. He lives in a trailer with his son just like living in a normal house. It is the cheapest form of housing. That’s not what I want. I want it moving from one place to another!

Well, maybe I’ll resort to rv camping instead.

Depending on one’s outlook in life, we can be spoiling ourselves or hard on ourselves. Those are both extremes. If you’re in one of those categories, you might want to try the opposite from time to time.

If you’re used to spoiling yourself, it is high time to learn to restrain yourself and have some experience of deprivation so that in times you’re financially down it will not be as painful. It only needs some getting used to.

On the other hand, if you’re used to self-deprivation, maybe it’s high time to experience having a better life even once in a while. Being used to deprivation, saving is always in your mind. Reward yourself with something so good without having to spend as much as you have to.

The reward still depends on your financial status in life. It can be as simple as eating out in a restaurant or as grand as a Westgate reservation. The point is, reward yourself from time to time to make life better. Remember, enjoy to live and live to enjoy.

by Cecile Cinco

It was in 1989. The Subic Naval Base in Olongapo still existed at that time. A couple (black American married to a Filipina) friends invited several of us young people in the Church to learn how to play golf. There were about 7 of us. It was exciting as I really wanted to know how to play golf. That time, playing bowling for about half a year, I thought that learning another sport was just a great opportunity. I knew golf is sport for the rich but since the door was open, why not grab it?

We were taught all the different golf equipment we need to know about at that time. The stance was very important, as much as the importance of how you hold the club, how you swing and follow through. Even the twist of your body was important.

We were all doing great and having fun until we reached the putting area. I was just a few feet away from the hole. I was told the twist of the body was a bit different. It’s sort of like twisting your upper body leaving your legs in place except for one that twists also. When I tried it, I suddenly fell on the ground, my right knee in pain. I realized that my kneecap moved to the outer side. Realizing I will not be able to stand in that situation, I bravely slapped my kneecap into place, with a loud cry. I asked for ice to apply first aid and stayed sitting on the ground for an hour before I was brought up to a bench.

Going home, I had to be carried. I rode the back of the guy who invited us. It was a sorry state. I was in the middle of a bowling tourney that time and I could not play. I could not even walk. My knee was in bandage but I kept trying to walk. Little by little I did.

The next week I tried to play bowling without the initial strides. I usually make 5 strides instead of the normal 3 that other players make. I stand the farthest from the lane and almost always at the edge because of the 5 strides I have to make. That time I could not walk well, I had to practice playing without a stride at all. It wasn’t easy and my score was not good but it opened opportunity to make bowling more fun. Another was playing bowling with eyes covered. If you did not get a strike, you will be told what pins are left.

I don’t regret that day when I tried to learn to play golf. With the bad incident, I made bowling more exciting. Not that it wasn’t but I was able to have others play with me the new ways I thought of. Oh, and that was the tourney I got the 3rd place in the women’s division. The first 2 were players for 5 and 10 years. I played with passion.

Although I’ve always said that “whoever said that laughter is the best medicine has never had asthma,” still laughter has a lot to do to make our whole being lighter and brighter.

- reduces stress, tension, depression, anger, etc

- adds spice to life

- makes you handle life’s challenges with ease

- reduces pain since laughter reduces endorphins more potent than equal amounts of morphine

- makes you a better communicator and team player

- boosts immune system

- you get some exercise

- when you make fun of yourself, you snatch the opportunity from others who would make fun of yourself

I used to have a sweatshirt where I painted the words “I’ve been on a diet for two weeks and all I lost is two weeks!” It made everyone who saw it laugh and it stripped others off the idea of making fun of me being a bit chubby then. The shirt has long been gone but I still love and laugh at the quote.

There is a local company that makes fun of the known expressions like “No Fear” was spelled “No Fera” which, for those who can understand Tagalog, means “no money” (no pera, walang pera). The design was still that of the original “No Fear” design. Another is the “TAG HEUER” logo but with “TAG HIRAP” instead, which means “time of recession” or “time of frugal living” or “time of poor living” and it all boils down to financial decline.

Not only do you share your idea to others by wearing funny t shirts but you help others as well to laugh some. A day without laughter is day wasted. Don’t wait till you have to do laughter therapy. Start now! Read jokes, watch comedies, and share the laughter with others. Just like a smile, it’s contagious and it’s free.

by Cecile Cinco

My second daughter, who is now 11, told me some months ago what she always looks forward to. She said there are three seasons in a year: the summer (Church) outing, the Feast of Tabernacles, and the yearend (Church) outing.

The Feast is an annual celebration. The other two are annual Church activities and she looks forward to them because of the swimming. It’s only a pool big enough for about 80. Whether we hold it where available, there’s always a separate pool for the kids. Somehow she has learned to manage underwater and can somehow tread in the adult pool. When we have those activities, my kids are usually the first to get in the pool and the last to come out. They maximize their stay because it will be another half year before they can be back again.

I love swimming too. It used to be when I was living in Olongapo that I would bike along the zigzag of Subic which is along the coast. After the tiring zigzag, I’d chain the bike to a post in one of the public beach resorts and go for a swim trying to be the farthest among those swimming. After resting by floating for about ten minutes, I’d go back to the shore, unchain my bike and ride back home dripping wet. By the time I get home, I’ve dried up. No, I wasn’t wearing any sexy swimwear. Just a short overall that’s light enough even worn dripping wet but thick enough so my insides don’t show especially when dripping wet. Oh, I miss those times…

by Cecile Cinco

I’ve always said, “Whoever said ‘laughter is the best medicine’ has never had asthma.”

I do have asthma which just manifested in the 90s when I had no way of doing my usual rigorous activities like hiking, cycling, swimming, and bowling on a fairly regular basis. Instead, I was left to no choice at all traveling to and from work for a total of 5 hours a day. At work, it would be sitting all day in front of the computer. In short, I lacked the exercise I needed to develop my resistance and immune system. Having asthma attacks can be fatal and I’ve had my share of fatal attacks.

I love jokes. Good jokes make me laugh. The problem is, laughing too much triggers asthma. That is, if the immune system is not strong enough. Recently, though, I’ve had less and less asthma attacks so I can read or listen to jokes as much as I’d like to.

*According to Michael Miller, M.D., the director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, laughter causes the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels to expand and increase blood flow. Researchers also found that mental stress can cause an unhealthy narrowing of blood vessels – a condition that can lead to or contribute to heart disease.

Other than falling off your chair or getting a stitch in your side, laughing won’t hurt you. Giggle your way into a ripe old age.

Want to prolong your life? Keep a good sense of humor, and . . .

Watch funny comedy shows and old movies

Read funny stories and humorous jokes

Try to avoid overly serious or stern people

Try and find the humor in everyday things

Share the laughter with others – it’s contagious

Tell the people you love that you love them, improve everybody’s mood

Forgive and try to forget

Keep learning

Enjoy the simple things life has to offer
