Acne is a problem most teenagers dwell on. Even if older adults get them, it is the group of teens that spend the most time in trying to be without it and even try to hide from people when they get them, especially on the tip of the nose. Ouch!

Teens have also believed several myths that make the situation far worse than not believing in them.

Myth: Frequent washing clears up acne. It can actually be a reason to clog the pores. Washcloth makes it worse due to irritation. Best is to use bare hands gently and only up to twice a day.

Myth: Stress causes acne. Theoretically, stress can have effect on hormones but an effective treatment is stronger than the effect of stress itself. Certain psychiatric medications may have acne as side effects but stress alone is no big deal.

Myth: Masturbation or sex causes acne. As early as the 17th century, this notion was meant to prevent premarital sex, but it’s plain hype.

Myth: Sun rays will help cure acne. It’s just a short-term plaster that will bite back sooner than later and with more acne. Get sun rays no later than 7am to get the benefits of vitamin D and never walk under the sun without protection between 10am to 2pm.

Myth: Acne and diet are related. Actually, more research is needed for this.

If you have acne, the best thing to do is research treatments for acne so you can intelligently weigh which is best for you.
