What makes one elite? Is it the status in life that in fact one is rich? Is it how one brings himself or herself amidst the crowd of people, discriminating the weak and belonging to the strong not necessarily being rich? Or could it be how one handles the self in public with the choicest apparel and shoes and fine dining, not being able to stoop down to simplicity? He or she may even buy gurkha cigars online just to show he or she belongs to the rich and famous though in reality having a hard time keeping up with the expenses.

On the other hand, there are those who are really rich and yet come out simple. You’ll never know they are rich from first impression. Friendly and lowly, you can talk with them and feel the humility.

What makes one elite?

I miss Papa’s drawings. He’s one of the greatest painters I’ve known. His sketches alone can actually be framed! Actually, when I was much younger, the wife of his co-artist in Ayala Museum dug out his sketches from the waste basket. Later, we learned that she framed them and gave them as gifts to friends.

Papa’s no longer painting since he died Nov. 1, 2005 but his art lingers on. He has the most number of dioramas made at the Ayala Museum, he has several at the Quezon City Circle, some at the Sto. Nino Shrine in Tacloban, life-sized dioramas at the Villa Escudero, and a lot more elsewhere. The mural at the PMA lobby is his too and the diorama at the souvenir shop.

Now that he’s gone, all I got are his sketches. I plan to copy them, draw them myself. My kids, especially my 2nd, also want to draw. She’s actually a lot better than I am. Here’s one of his sketches: about a fisherman catching fish using a fish net and a little boy using a fishing line. Before he died, he dwelt on painting using watercolor. Different people have different types when it comes to furniture. Given the option, people would like to choose the kind they like. It sort of  defines the owner’s personality…or it just plainly show what the owner likes.

Sentimental people would normally go for antiques. Nature people would go for a fallen tree. Fast-paced people would normally go for modern furniture.

What do you go for?

My second daughter, Myrrh Raquel, is twelve. The first second hand cel phone she bought from the store was worth P400. After a few months, the phone was dead. She wanted to buy another but she had no money.

As I was browsing over ebay, I noticed dead phones being sold. I told her about it. She was hopeful. She had her phone sold at P400, less courier expense of P100. Result, she used the phone for a few months for worth P100.

Later my mom handed over to her a used phone. She used it for a few months and wanted to have another. She said she’ll sell at P1000 and buy a cheaper one. I  asked why P1000. She said because some people are willing to buy dead phones for P400 and the phone she wanted to sell was working fine.

She sold successfully. She then scouted for available cell phones for a maximum of P700. It took quite a while. Bid after bid, outbid after outbid, until after about a hundred tries, she finally won at P510 which the buy-now price was more than P1000.

Yesterday I deposited the money to the seller’s bank. We’re now waiting for the delivery.

Among my 3 girls, she’s the one with entrepreneurial spirit.

By the way, she is the sickly among the 3. I had an ovarian cyst and was operated on while she was 5 months in my womb. She survived but the general anesthesia made her learning and motor skills slower than usual. I delivered her normally. She’s our miracle baby.

Master Rapper, Francis Magalona, aka “Kiko” and “Francis M” was announced a few minutes ago at GMA-7′s noontime game show, Eat Bulaga, to have died at high noon today.

Francis M has been a part of Eat Bulaga for a long time and he’s been an influence to Philippine rap. I find that his rap is like no other. I’m not a fan of rap but he definitely made the industry proud of him in that aspect. Perhaps it has something to do with his lyrics and manner of rapping.
